From where I sit On The Kowch, the question radio people ask all the time is Who is listening? I was reminded of this with the latest release by Numeris of the Summer 2016 PPM Ratings in Canada’s five largest radio markets. We are obsessed with finding the answer through focus groups, research, surveys, PPM and ballot ratings. A lot depends on the answer if you’re in radio – especially if you’re the General Manager (GM), the General Sales Manger (GSM or the Program Director (PD). Which is why I thought Numeris – the radio and television ratings service in Canada – did a great job of trying to answer the question with its infographics campaign:
From where I sit On The Kowch, Iain Grant is my new hero. Not because he is an icon in Toronto radio as a host, program director, producer and technical whiz. But because as the new moderator of The Southern Ontario/WNY Radio TV-Forum, Iain is not politically correct when it comes to setting down the rules on who can join The Yellow Board.
This is the second time that Iain has come to the rescue of The SOWNY Board. It didn’t work the first time. But this time he makes it very clear that you play by his rules or you will be banned. He also blacklisted the trouble makers by refusing to let them login as members. They can visit, but he won’t let them play in his sandbox.
From where I sit On The Kowch, I paused upon hearing the news that former Quebec Premier Jacques Parizeau died at the age of 84. As an anglophone Quebecer, I’m supposed to hate the man who almost succeeded breaking up Canada on October 30, 1995 when the Yes side in Quebec’s second referendum received 49.6% support from voters. You can’t get any closer than that … he lost the referendum by less than a half share point and blamed “the ethnics and money” for the defeat. The next day he quit as premier.
I raised my two daughters, Melissa and Layla, that “hate” is too strong a word to be used carelessly. So I find it difficult to have hate on my mind upon hearing the news of his death. Instead, what came to my mind was the first time I met Parizeau and how our encounter made front page news.
From where I sit On the Kowch, the most exclusive club you can be a member of in radio is the 25% Club. This is the Club that guarantees success. When you’re a member, you beat the competition every day. How do you join? It’s simple. First, you must have a dream. It all begins with the burning desire to do something with your life.
It’s your dream. You own it and no one has the right to tell you to stop chasing your dream!
The next requirement to be a member of the 25% Club is to have a positive attitude. Believe in chasing your dream. Be the best at what you can do. And never assume a negative outcome when you start a project.
