By The Numbers: Toronto 2018 Winter PPM Ratings

Toronto 2018 Winter PPM Ratings were conducted November 27, 2017 - February 25, 2018.  A12+ Winter 2018 & Winter 2017  Fall PPM results are courtesy of Numeris. David Bray & Partners provide 2018 Winter and 2017 Fall  PPM results for A 12+ and 25-54 demos.

We're trying something different in this Toronto 2018 Winter PPM Ratings result report. We want to use the same criteria of how broadcasters and Program Directors earn PPM rating bonuses. So we are comparing the findings of the Winter 2018 PPM ratings with the 2017 Winter PPM rating results.  Broadcasters get their rating bonuses based on Fall to Fall, Winter to Winter and Spring to Spring ratings. So we're providing Winter '18 and '17 rating results so you can compare who is up, down or flat. David Bray adds Fall 2017 PPM ratings to give you more perspective on the ups and downs of radio ratings from the Winter to last Fall's rating period.

Dynamics of radio listening changes from season to season

In the winter, snowbirds flee the snow for warmer climates. Others take winter vacations to beach resorts. And others leave home during the Christmas/New Years break to visit family or spend a week or two on the beach.  All of this has an impact on radio station listenership. Add 24/7 Christmas music on some FM stations that attract listeners from the competition, and you have changes in the market.  Morning drive and afternoon drive radio is impacted because of winter vacations and snow storms. That is why we need to compare one rating period to the same period a year earlier to see if radio stations and its programming go up, down or stay flat during PPM ratings.

2018 Winter PPM ResultsToronto: Bragging rights at the top of the ratings heap go to CHFI-FM once again with a 14.8%  share of hours tuned for A12+ (up from 12.4% last time out). CHFI got a ratings boost from their month of all Christmas music, a yearly programming move that has certainly paid off. CHFI-FM takes the #1 spot with the ladies 25-54 delivering a 17.9% share (up from 15.6%) followed by CHUM-FM with a 12.1% share (down from 13.4%). CHUM-FM didn’t employ the all Christmas strategy and thus took a hit in December.  In a strange twist, CHFI-FM holds the #1 spot for males 25-54, posting an 13.3% share (up from 12.0 % in the last 13 week book) followed by 680News at 8.4% and Q107 with 7.8%. In an even more unusual twist, CHFI-FM leads the way for M18-34 with a 12.1% share. For F18-34, CHFI-FM tops the list posting a whopping 24.2%.

David Bray’s individual radio station numbers include A12+, W25-54 & M25-54. He compares Winter 2018 PPM ratings (in red) to Fall 2017 PPM ratings (in black).
