We’re trying something different in this English Montreal 2018 Winter PPM Ratings report. We want to use the same criteria of how broadcasters and Program Directors earn PPM rating bonuses. So we are comparing the findings of the Winter 2018 PPM ratings with the 2017 Winter PPM rating results. Broadcasters get their rating bonuses based on Fall to Fall, Winter to Winter and Spring to Spring ratings. So we’re providing Winter ’18 and ’17 rating results so you can compare who is up, down or flat. David Bray adds Fall 2017 PPM ratings to give you more perspective on the ups and downs of radio ratings from the Winter to last Fall’s rating period.
Dynamics of radio listening changes from season to season
In the winter, snowbirds flee the snow for warmer climates. Others take winter vacations to beach resorts. And others leave home during the Christmas/New Years break to visit family or spend a week or two on the beach. All of this has an impact on radio station listenership. Add 24/7 Christmas music on some FM stations that attract listeners from the competition, and you have changes in the market. Morning drive and afternoon drive radio is impacted because of winter vacations and snow storms. That is why we need to compare one rating period to the same period a year earlier to see if radio stations and its programming go up, down or stay flat during PPM ratings.
